it's been a long time coming

So, some time back France Belleville and I started this draw off thingy.
It started with France's great drawing of Tom's camera that you can see HERE.
I came back at her with THIS drawing. I wasn't too happy with back then, but it has grown on me a little since.
Then, a couple of weeks ago, she threw THIS at me.
And finally, here's my response. Drawn in black ink with a little help from a big fat 2B.
Yes, it was supposed to be a drawing of the front of the camera. I did try but I got all freaked out by all the circles (I have terrible OCD tendencies when it comes to drawing circles, they have to be perfectly round or I'll have a nervous breakdown). So it ended up being a side on version. I will attempt the full frontal version again sometime in the future. But, one thing is for sure, I definitely won't be getting into any drawing matches with Mademoiselle Belleville* ever again.
*Of course, I'm always up for a challenge with Madame Van Stone. Congratulations France and Tom.

But worth the wait! Fantastic drawing Andrea! I can't see why you didn't like the last drawing, the composition was so good - you really are too hard on yourself! ;)

Andrea...You are too funny about the OCD and perfect circles! I am new to your blog and love it. I can't draw at all and admire your talent. I am puzzled about the appeal of the Moleskin Journals. Doesn't the line down the middle of your artwork bother you? I should think it would trigger a really big nervous breakdown! Do you ever use big paper?

What fabulous pictures you both did. I enjoy your blog.

You and France Belleville are both incredibly talented - and you have a fabulous style! This drawing is totally awesome! Your comment made me laugh too - perfectionism is great when it gives results like this!

Thank you all, folks.

Content in a Cottage, it's strange but the fold in the page doesn't bother me anymore. I guess, I just like the Moleskine too much to give it up. I do use paper too. I've been making a conscious effort to do more of it.

Stephen, you've obviously never seen my post about my very shaky hands!

Cheers everyone. You're very kind.

Andrea, I just love zooming in on your work and looking at how you've carefully laid down your lines to create the shape and shading of the things that you draw. You always turn the most mundane items into beautiful pieces of art. The only thing that I would recommend is that you stop drawing across the fold of whatever book you are using to draw - just so that they will be ready for publication when you're ready to produce your book - because that's where you're headed. Some publisher is going to find your work someday and want to capitalize on it - for your good and his. Maybe that's already happened, but trust me girl, you're that good.

Hey girlie! I would not have EVEN ATTEMPTED a draw-down with Miss B! But, you and she are in a caliber all your own and if there is anyone that can have a draw-down, it's you two! Your lines are immaculate. I am always in awe!

I didn't expect to be slapped in the face tonight when i came to your blog! That's it, i am officially withdrawing from the battle :-) As Ms. Belleville, that is!!
This is incredible, Andrea. Many times i have toyed with the idea of doing a side view of Tom's camera, but didn't have the guts. Your lines are so fine. And i love how you let the little strap "go" toward the left.
I'm off to Flickr to fave it.

Thank you lovely peeps.

Rick, I am so touched. That's more than made my day.

France, of course, I am ALWAYS up for a challenge with Madame Vanstone!

Thank you, Joanie.
Cheers guys.

This is great stuff!! Love the details. If the circles freak you out, why not do an orthogonal view. Then the circles will be more like ovals!

Gillian Mowbray said...

This is excellent - a tricky subject indeed. I'm with you on the whole circular issue too - except you manage it and I don't!

That silence is me - speechless, dumbstruck, pouring myself another glass of Riesling. And beside myself with admiration.

I found your blog and I really enjoy your work. I love the "global lighting" of your washing machine illustration and of the letters illustration.

Suzanne, I too have been comforted by your lack of posts recently. It is a cold dark place and I just hope to be on my way back out of it.

Thanks everyone for continuing to visit, even though I've had nothing to show you. I appreciate it. Cheers.
