woman on bus

So this is my first attempt at drawing in public. I found it quite intimidating as it was on a packed bus. I have always hated life drawing classes. I just find there's a real pressure from having people around you; watching you, judging you. So the idea of drawing in public, to me, was very scary. However, there was a lady sat in front of me with her hair tied in a big knot. I was wondering how it stayed there -with no visible pins or clips. I found myself thinking "that would be interesting to draw". So finally I got a notebook out of my bag and this was the result. From now on I'll carry a sketchbook.

I love the bun...it actually looks kinda like a cinamon bun. Congratulations on this step. I hate drawing attention to myself when I'm drawing, but it does get less painful with time.

Kudos to you for sketching in public! I was the same way until the first time and I discovered that the 'bad art' police never came and arrested me. And there are such interesting people and places that demand a sketch.

Keep up the good work!

I'm glad you overcame your fear. I love this picture: I drew something similar myself earlier in the year. Check it out here:

I actually showed it to the lady when I was done and she said, "That's exactly what I thought I looked like from behind!"

Yea! You did an excellent job with this! I find drawing in public, pretty intimadating, myself. Once I am really into the drawing, it isn't too big of a deal.

Yay Andrea! I've found that it's really fun drawing people out and about and really. Her bun reminds me of my favorite cinamon bun donuts and made me hungry!

Thanks everyone for your comments - I think I'l have to pluck up some courage before going out and sitting on the street and drawing, but it was a start! Do you ever feel comfortable about drawing in public? I cannot imagine that time.
It's funny I was going to call this 'Woman with Bun' (which is what we call that hairstyle here in te UK) but I thought it meant something totally different in the US - or is that just the plural?
Cheers all.

I can't help but start imagining the life of the woman on the bus. What does she do? Where is she going? Who are her family members? What does she like to cook? I really love this.

Oddly enough, I love to sketch people (and other living things) but don't much care to sketch objects. But I am pretty sneaky about it -- suspect that's why it's hard for me to finish a sketch!

Found that photos take care of my need to catch what I see in the way of objects.

Love the whorly-swirly of her hair, BTW.

This post and all the comments are really great, as I too have trouble drawing under pressure or in public. It's nice to know that lots of people feel the same way! I've always wanted to carry a sketchbook around, and now I think I just might do it, so thanks for the encouragement!
