the light nights are here

I find having to post photos of my work really frustrating. I want you all to be able to get a proper look, stick your beaks in and all that, and I don't feel that you can do that with photos. I mean, seriously, how does one photograph a trompe l'oeil? The angle, the light, the colour, the detail - especially the detail - it just doesn't work. In my opinion. Oh well, until I can afford an A3 scanner that's just the way it is.
The question I get asked the most is about the pens that I use. I always find it astonishing that people would want to know but, if you are interested, you can find a photo, and some notes, of every pen used in this drawing HERE.

  1. An A3 scanner is not always the answer - my scanne does such tragic things to my guache paintings that I find they come out with better colours if I just photograph them. If you want to show us detail - take macro shots - then we can even see the line of your textures ...

Loving yor work as always ...

  4. That's it, you are the master of the trompe l'œil. The red pen is disturbingly real, no matter the angle.

I just love your art, I do have a question. How do you keep the ink from smearing???

Lovely drawings, remind me of my old bike, when I was 7yo ...

  7. I'm crazy about "tools of the trade" info...so thanks for posting that. I agree that scanners aren't a perfect solution. Online things just look different than in person, but it's still a good thing to share what you're doing. I'm liking the bike pieces very much and am happy to look at them.

  9. WOW. Your work just keeps getting more amazing. I can only imagine how this drawing must look in person, as the photos already make it look mighty fantastic!

  13. You know, Andrea, your note today is funny because your blog, above all others, is the one where I squint and squint and press my head up against the screen and try really really hard to see all that great detail. Some day I hope to see one in person. Anyway, great job!

  14. my experience with scanners
(those that cost hundreds, not thousands)
is that they don't do a good job capturing subtlety.
The more i look around at artist's blogging, photos actually do a better job than scanners do.

  17. The trompe l'oeil works well, even with photos! The pens seem completely tridimensional. It's an amazing drawing!

  18. Andrea, do you want to know how well your trompe l'oeil came across? I've been looking at the picture for days now, without reading the comments.

I've been trying to figure out what the trompe l'oeil was. (was it the red part of the pic? the red "line" down the middle? I can be a bit naive, But I really wasn't seeing it!) It was only after reading the comments that I saw it was the pens. They look THAT real. So honestly, I think you did an awesome job.

  23. Wow. Thanks, folks.

France, that's the bit I really wanted to show - the pens. I just don't think you see them at quite the right angle.

Kathy Jones, just don't use the ones that are prone to smearing. I think that's the only answer.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, guys. You make my day.

  25. Andrea, I already perceive your work as totally AMAZING, despite your lack of A3 scanner. If you were to achieve the type of scan quality you are after, I think my brain will explode from the extra ogling!
