a couple of quickies.

Just a couple of quick sketchbook page drawings. They haven't scanned very well - a little washed out. Still I've finally managed to get two pictures in one post. Of course, they are not quite where I wanted them to be, but still, one step at a time....

Onions in pen and watercolour.

  1. I love these! You really grasped the papery texture of the onion skin with your the wash and light pen strokes. Nice job!

I really like these. You captured the crackly feel of the skin!

I understand your frustration with scanners making things look lighter than they actually are. But wow, this is gorgeous.

  6. Thanks everyone. I did struggle with whether or not to post these -as they are quite 'rough' sketches. But even though they are quite different from the work I usually do theres something I like about them. What I always find surprising is that people respond to the work that you wouldn't expect them too!? Does anyone else find that?

  8. excellent drawings! i think a more precise and "perfect" rendering would have taken away from how you captured the frailness of the onion skin.

    Hola Andrea :-)
I agree with what you're saying about people's reactions to the stuff we felt "meh" about! And i think it's partly because they are drawings that we did not intentionally work on - they came out of us like that, and they usually have a freshness that people can detect immediately. I hope this all makes sense. I could write pages about that but i'll stop here.
Also, i liked your question about today's chair on my blog -- since it was drawn in the back of a photocopy which had text on it, the text showed through. I just left it like that, in all its roughness.

  12. Thanks everyone for the comments. France, it is an interesting subject isn't it? Where all this stuff comes from - you're right it could take pages. Why do we draw the things we do? The drawings we don't like - do they represent a part or place in us we do not like? That we do not want to show to the world?? Very interesting....
